Ourense New Intermodal Station
Ourense, Spain
Competition Project - 2011- Finalist

with Eduardo Souto Mouro and Adriano Pimenta

When, in the late 19th century, the train stations were built, cities had a significant development. These buildings generated the station’s plaza, hotels, restaurants, commerce, urban transportations, etc.
In some cases, this development caused the urban tissue disruption when streets were cut and became discontinuous. This didn’t happen when stations were terminals, mostly in the big metropolises when it was possible to bury the railways, therefor not disturbing the city in its “surface”. In Ourense, this didn’t happen. The general rule was followed, and the city is divided in two parts, North and South, even with the existence of some bridges that circumstantially establish their connection.

This proposal’s interest is to minimize the “presence” of a disrupted city, being the new station’s building and its complementary programmes a factor of cohesion and connection between the two city’s parts, avoiding any effect of disruption or interruption as it happened before.
It is aimed to “build” city, in continuity with the existing one, settling squares, gardens, roundabouts, with other adjacent buildings, and, mostly, to create a new centrality, referenced by a tall building.

The project’s main theme is, as it has been said, to build a solid city fragment, with thickness, so that there are no hesitations in the perception of this new urban episode… that Ourense wants and needs for the time being!
